Åland Spezial 2001/2002, 5-1/4 by 8-3/4 inches, perfect bound, soft covers, 168 pages. In German, Robert Fillips, Kornwestheim, Germany, approximately $25, ISBN 3-92847015-9.

Fillips has a vested interest in this specialized catalog as he is also a dealer in the stamps and other postal artifacts of Åland. It appears annually and this is the tenth edition. It is a priced catalog with values shown in Euros. Although the descriptive text is in German, the table of contents and the explanation of how to use the catalog are also given in English.

The stamp listings begin in 1984 and values are shown for mint, used, on cover, gutter pairs, FDCs, and maximum cards. The stamps are illustrated in black and white. Year sets, year packs, FDC packs and other postal service offerings are listed as well. Following the stamp listings are those for meter stamps, thermo-printed labels, postal stationery including Red Cross cards, maximum cards and phone cards.

One section shows special and commemorative cancels, first day cancels, and exhibition cancels. Fourteen pages are devoted to plate flaws and varieties of the stamps. Two nice features are the rate tables from 1984 to present, and a list of post offices. There is an interesting article on Åland ship mail but it is in German only. A brief history of the country is given in both German and English.

A short bibliography and an outline map of Åland showing the towns conclude this catalog. The illustrations are acceptable and help non-German readers to tell which stamp is described. There seems to be just about everything here for the Åland collector, in a handy size.
